Mail Server Problem
During the course of Friday morning we
started an update to our mail servers in order to provide better
spam protection and a greatly enhanced webmail package.
Unfortunately the installation stalled,
as these things sometimes do. The result was that the security permissions set on a very large
number of files became corrupt resulting in the server
effectively shutting itself out from itself.
We and a team of technicians worked on
the problem and webmail facilities were soon restored allowing
customers to access their mail, shortly after that the outgoing
servers were working correctly again. Regrettably it has
taken some 54 hours to recover the incoming mail facility.
Please be assured that no mail will have
been lost, it was simply queued on the server awaiting
collection.
We apologise for the
inconvenience caused.
The following updates were posted here
during the course of solving this problem:
Since about 2 o'clock today (7 March
2008) we have been experiencing some problems with
our mail servers and apologise for the
inconvenience caused.
The problem is being worked on and a full
service will be restored as soon as possible.
Update 00:50 on Saturday 8 March
2008
Server technicians continue to work on
the mail problem and the web mail service is now running.
You can access your mail by
going to http://webmail.yourdomainname.ext where you use your
actual domain name and extension ie literate.co.uk in place of
yourdomainname.ext. Use your full email address as the
username with your normal email password.
This is a new and much enhanced version
of webmail and it was updating to this that started the problems
we are now working on.
Update 08:15 on Saturday 8 March
2008
Server technicians continue to work on
the mail problem and web mail remains available.
We know what the problem is - it is to do
with file permissions which became corrupt during the upgrade
process - and we are having to correct each file permission.
With many thousands of files affected this is regrettably a time
consuming job. Thank you for your patience and again many
apologies for the inconvenience.
Update 08:50 on Saturday 8 March
2008
Remote mail sending is now functional, ie
you can send messages using Outlook, Eudora, etc.
Receiving messages remains a problem that the server technicians
are working on. Web mail remains available.
Update
23:50 on Saturday 8 March
